I got my powerbook about 3 months ago, to say i have babied it would be an understatement. I treated this thing as if it were fragile from moment #1. i always hated that i couldnt just clip it closed and pick it up , had to handle with care due to the gap that "wiggles" when its being carried closed etc...
Well 2 days ago it stopped shutting, now it pops open on its own about 3 seconds after i close it. I'm kinda pissed cause it didnt do this new and i've treated it like gold. I am going to send it back to apple care I think, has anyone had similar experience?
P.s. when you send it back, do you just lock them out or do you delete sensitive data? just wondering
i have the apple care plan so im sure it wont be too much of a hassle.

Try these...I dont work for them I just love the product. Makes your pb feel like an aluminum billet. Pricey but worth every penny.

you must have one of the earlier builds with the latch problems....the good news is that Apple will fix it for you and do so very quickly. It seems turnaround time is three days from when you send it in. One day to get to Apple, one day to repair and then back to you on the third day. It's relatively painless though of course frustrating.
I think the build quality is superb in general, except for those initial problems. The best way to make that gap go away is to put a cloth between the keyboard and lcd...it fills it out so that when you grab it there's virtually no give at all.
Hope the repair goes smoothly and swiftly!

Hey, I had exactly the same problem you describe. I got a brand new 17" 1.33ghz in Janauary and I handled it like it was a newborn baby. But after three weeks of ownership, one day the lid just popped open. I tried to close it and it would stay shut for a few seconds, and then bounce right open again. Within a few hours, the lid wouldn't stay shut at all.

I was slightly annoyed after shelling out three grand for a laptop only to see it display a fault after less than a month of ownership. But I have to say that Apple were great. I called Applecare and - without question - they sent me out a box. My powerbook was picked up on a Wednesday afternoon, and was back in my hands two days later on Friday morning.

The latch now seems to be fixed and the lid closes perfectly. All in all, I was amazed at the speed and efficiency of the Apple Care service.

Mine wiggles, and i still clip-it, and pick it up, stuff it in my back pack, and even toss it on the bed (the bed's soft )

Or you could buy those at most hardware or department stores for about $2. They just aren't labelled "for a PowerBook."

You can fix the clip problem yourself. All you have to do is bend the clip very slightly toward the back of the machine.
