are you sure this isn't just antialiasing?
anyways, you can adjust this in System Preferences.. under a Appearance.
Preferences is one way.
The other is: use your terminal or BBedit.
In your homefolder is a hidden folder called .MacOSX. You can also use 'Go -> Go to Folder' from the finder menu.
Open the file (environment.plist) and change the entries.
<key>QDTEXT_ANTIALIASING</key>
<string>-1</string>
<key>QDTEXT_MINSIZE</key>
<string>48</string>
This means text antialiasing only for fonts larger than 48 Points. Choose any number that suits your personal preferences. This affects also the Finder menubar :0).
After that every font that is smaller than this number will appear very sharp, without gray edges (antialiasing).
If anyone has a way to change the fonts for the Icons on the desktop I would appreciate a hint.
