I have a 15" G4 Powerbook (Al). The cover for it seems to be a bit springy and a bit temperamental.

If I am using it and I want to put it to sleep, then I just close the cover and done. Very nice. The light on the button breathes away and I then can move it about.

But when I go to open it again, I press on the button, lift it up, and it starts up again. Yay!

Unfortunately that isn't always the case and sometimes while I am opening it up, it slips out of my hand and just slams itself shut again. Or it will bang shut and then spring back to where it just was.
Either way, it causes the machine to go black. No sleeping button light, and the screen is black. It doesn't respond to any button presses on the keyboard, or the power button.
I have to close it, then open it via the button again, and then press any button (usually the power button), then it will come alive and have the dialog box that is normal if you press the power button (do you want to shut down, restart, whatever).

Is this normal? Is there a software setting that says "If I am sleeping and have my cover opened and then shut again very quickly, then kill the screen and ignore the keys"?
Is there a way to adjust the "snap" of the cover? It isn't especially smooth on mine (and it seems to change as the unit gets hot with work as well - eventually making creaking, cracking, and popping sounds if you adjust it in the upright position - which I guess heat sensitivity is to be expected with an all metal case).

That doesn't sound particularly normal to me. You might want to have an Apple Tech look at it.
