Anyone remember, a few months ago, the rumor about a 4" by 6" white plastic enclosure being made by one of Apple's plants overseas? Speculation was it would be a media player or iPod Video unit. Maybe it's a "mini iBook."
I know I'd buy if Apple did anything like this little critter:

Did you check out the lid? Crazy.
I am not accustomed to any kind of lust response to products on the PC side--ever--but this thing is neat. Word is it'll be in the $1200 range. Of course, it runs Windows, so it's not 100% desirable, but as an alternative to Palm (now that they've all but abandoned Mac users), it's somewhat appealing. I'm in the market to replace my m505 with a unit featuring Bluetooth/WIFI, and any Palm worth buying is $500; this seems to offer a good deal more. Windows, though, right?

4" x 5.8" x 1", under 1 lb., with all that functionality, "way too big"? OK, champ!
I guess your work doesn't require much travel. As much as I love my iBook, carrying it, a cellphone, iPod and sometimes a PDA as well is a burden. Even the iBook gets heavy after a few hours.
The ability to respond to email, websurf (not RSS-surf), review spreadsheets, etc. in a package that small is attractive. Which is why I prefaced my comments with speculation that the 4" x 6" white enclosure being made by an Apple plant may be something like this. If and when Apple makes their version, I'll look for your name on a post celebrating it as the perfect link between a laptop and a PDA.
I'm with you that typing the Great American Novel on a thumbs-only keyboard would be an exercise in futility. But as a business machine, this thing has got everything else beat. Ever tried that little clip-on QWERTY keyboard for the Palm? It's about 3" wide, and impossible. And the smallest Sony VAIO is nearly the size of an iBook, and way too expensive.
There is definitely a market for a mini laptop that bridges the gap between laptop and PDA. I don't want to spend a single dime on a device that doesn't run a Mac OS, but my Newton just doesn't cut the mustard any more, leaving me with an ugly set of choices: Palm (no longer supporting Mac Desktop, and at least $500 for a model with WIFI or Bluetooth), Pocket PC (running some awful, half-baked derivation of Windows, $500 and up), or this thing, which offers much more across-the-board functionality--albeit in Windows XP--for $1200. At least I know I'll be able to network it with my Panther machines at home and at work, and run Excel, view PDF, etc.
If Apple produces a mini laptop, I'm there like white on rice. But if they don't, I've got a choice to make...
