Well, about 1 month ago, I bought my wife a new 12" powerbook.

It is the 1GHZ combo drive model... i added an airport Extreme card & 512 MB of extra RAM (it has 768 now total).

Well, my friend just bought a 15" 1.25GHZ with Superdrive.

That was the model I tried to convince my wife to buy.

Long story short, Apple had refurbs on their site & I ordered one.

Yup - I have a 15" 1.25 superdrive unit on the way for $2099.00.

I went ahead to crucial.com & ordered 2 512MB SoDimms of RAM.. .so I will remove the 2 256MB & install the 2 512MB (to get it up to 1 gig of RAM).

I ordered it Friday & it shipped Friday evening.

Once I get it, I will install the RAM immediately before I even boot it up. Then I will boot & get everything copied over from the 12".

Then the 12" will go on EBAY.

Overall, I am sure it will cost me a few hundred beans.

I know I need to slow down, in the past 2 years, I have had the following (bought & sold):

ibook 500
ibook 700
imac 800
tiBook 800
Sony Vaio Desktop PC with 17" FP (mistake, but the wife wanted it)
ibook G4 800
powerbook 12" 1ghz combo
now, I will be getting this 15" Powerbook.

I use an IBM thinkpad for work and bring home & use for personal - -which is actually a VERY good machine (except it runs windows). If I were to buy a PC laptop for personal use, I would buy an IBM.

So - All of these above machines were basically for my wife... but she could care less (just wants a computer that works & wants a mac).

This doesnt seem like such a big deal to me. It seems that most people getting the 15" are people upgrading from either the 12" or the 15" Ti. Hope you arent dissapointed with anything when it shows up.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

That's a resounding "yes".

Well, not really; I'm going downward. I hate the bulk of my 15 (since it's not my primary anymore).

Totally empathize.

I feel your pain :-).

In the past year, I've had the following: Two iBooks, one 867 12 inch PB, and now a 1ghz 12 inch PB. Thing is, I'm eyeing those 15 inch refurbished, carefully. $2099 for a 15inch 1.25 PB is an excellent deal. I've already got a buyer for my current PB lined up in case I take the plunge.

I'm sick, I tell you.

We're not all that different, you and me. I have had three PBs since the TiBooks first came out, and I even had a brief interlude with a Vaio portable and an iBook. I have come to rest comfortably with my 12 inch PB because, at last, I have a PB that has the power, size and durability I was wanting.

I think I'll be sticking with the 12 for awhile.

That said, I am getting a little tired of my Quicksilver . . .

If I had the money and the means, I would be buying Macs all of the time.

So yes, we're crazy.

This only means apple is an excellent marketer of their products.

It IS very tempting to buy more macs than you really need because they are all so pretty. And you find lots of people in these forums who tell you that THEIR model is the greatest they ever had.

But judged with a cool head: every mac has its nice sides and its bad ones. The bad sides make us want a new machine soon. This will NEVER change unless apple marketing gets mad. Please do what I did before: write down the REAL advantages a new mac will have compared to the one you have now. You will find out that you get tiny things (mostly a different look) for much money.

I think we will always be tempted to buy almost every new model unless we focus on the things we DO WITH OUR MACS. Just read the cool storys on the apple site about scientists, musician, artists etc.

I develop java software on the mac. And since I have had some ideas I really like and want to develop into cool software, my Powerbook is the tool that helps me doing this instead of a shiny thing that needs to be cared for and which is a pride to own.

It is a cool tool. But its also a bad effort to migrate things to a new machine. So the focus moves to keeping the old machine. Thats no problem, because every day I use it, its a great experience and I am thankfull that I have chosen a mac for my work (I see linux guys every few days fiddling around with their crappy systems).

You will never experience the real value of a mac unless you begin to rely on your machine.

so this way I get very satisfied with the machine I HAVE NOW.

Thanks for the replies. I will "try" to keep this new powerbook for at least 1 year. I will be VERY tempted if a G5 powerbook comes out soon, but I like to wait until something has been out for a bit before I buy it. There are usually a ton of issues with the first major hardware revision.

I realize the 15" 1.25 is a rev A., but it uses a lot of tried & true technology. I will be a bit more cautious when considering the purchase of a G5 Powerbook.

Hopefully I don't get any of the bugs with my "new" Powerbook (like white spots & such).
