I heard about the heat problem before I bought it, but my friend says the 2nd generation of 12" pb solved that problem. So I decided to go for it, but it's still really hot! I have tried adjusting the performance to low and did things that apple website suggests, but the laptop is still so hot. I just bought this laptop a week ago, and, having spent so much for it, was hoping for something with less flaws. I honestly don't mind the fan noise, and wouldn't mind to keep the fan on all time if it could help reduce the heat.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how to constantly keep the fan on? Or any other tricks to reduce the heat? Will reducing the brightness of the screen reduce the heat? I would appreciate any answer at all

what surface do you use your powerbook on most of the time.

currently i am lying on my couch with my powerbook on my lap. it is either this sort of arrangement, or i have my powerbook on a glass table where i work.

right now the left hand wrist area is _slightly_ warm. this is where the hard drive is, and a lot of usage will warm this area up quickly. the powerbook fan is on, but on the lowest setting. i actually had to lift my powerbook to my ear now to hear if the fan was on or not.

when i use my powerbook on the glass table the fan hardly ever turns on.

i asked what surface you used it on, since if the air vents get blocked, the fans will kick in very soon, and your powerbook will heat up. if i lie in bed with my powerbook on my lap, on my big puffy comforter, the fans turn on very soon.

if you are using your powerbook on your desk and not doing anything too serious with it (games, etc), you might want to get it checked out, because it should not be really hot, like you say.

otherwise, maybe an icurve, a coolpad, or some sort of product like that might be an investment.

Buy a laptop cooler and you'll be tons happier. I got an iCurve and it works great.

I think that this is not really a problem at all.
In fact, I have a Rev A 867MHz model and I do not have problems with heat, especially after Panther upgrade which cooled it even more.

This seems to be more of a personal call. I have owned several laptops and the heat this makes is only warm, not hot, and a lot cooler than my old Dell. I could never put that thing on my lap like I can this powerbook. So, for me, the heat is nothing. I really think this is a very subjective thing. Even 15" and 17" owners have complained about heat.

So, either it is you or something is wrong with your computer, but probably it's just your tolerance level and what you expected from a laptop.
Doing my part to make MS obsolete. Oh, and the Iraq war is a bogus war.

How much RAM do you have? the minimium?

I think more RAM would reduce HD use for virtual memory, and this might solve the problem a little.

Also, consider getting a mouse. Since I got the Apple BT mouse, the heat problem is much more bearable, since you are touching the machine much less, and the BT mouse certainly doesn't have a heat problem.

I'm curious to know where you find the heat unbearable. I'm assuming the heat is coming on the bottom surface of the PowerBook which you place on your lap. Its quite normal for the PowerBook to be "hot" considering it has an aluminum anodized exterior, which is a heat conductor. The iBooks, made of polycarbonate plastic, are slightly less warm, but it can still be unbearable when placed on the exposed skin (useful on during the winters, I'm told).

If this is your primary problem, I'd recommend getting the Podium Coolpad. It works great as a laptop stand on the lap and on a desk. It elevates the PowerBook/iBook so that heat can be better dissipated and cool air brought to the bottom (as opposed to having it lay flat on the surface). Not exactly the cheapest (I made my own improvised version of the SpeedBalls), but they do the job well. It allows you to adjust the height, and it acts as a swivel.

I've heard complaints from some people about a lot of heat escaping through the keyboard (so it becomes unbearable to type). It may be signs of an overheating power supply/charger, so it might be helpful to have someone from Apple look at it.

"If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!"

This topic has been covered about a HUNDRED TIMES in this forum--if you can't find any solutions by doing a search, I suggest returning the Powerbook and getting something that meets your tender sensitivities.

I'm just so annoyed at the bitching and complaining about the heat from the Powerbook...nothing personal intended, but if you don't like it, return it!
