I am looking into getting the ibook g3 sometime and was wondering if there have been any reports of overheating. Also, if I'm not mistaken, it's the g3 powerbook that has the hinge problem, and not the ibook...right?

I have never heard of a G3 ibook overheating unless the ventilation ports were blocked (don't use on a pillow) and the hinge issue is only on the PowerBook G4 (TiBook, Gigabit, DVI and 867/1Gig) and the hinge was redesigned on the FW800 series

The G3 iBook does have a problem with the hinge. The first models (500/600mhz) were hard to open and the hinge was "squiking". All G3 iBooks have a problem with the hinge which cause the cables to get damaged with time (the airport signal becomes weak when the screen is opened with an angle > 100° and it may cause the screen to become dark).

No overheating problem with the iBook...

I didn't look at the machine you're planning to purchase, but be aware that the white iBook G3 (manufactured from 2001-2003) has a significant design flaw that is finally now covered by an Apple Repair Program. If you plan to buy one of these machines, don't be shocked if you run into difficulty. Thankfully, Apple has pledged to support these units for three years past their initial resale date, if I'm not mistaken.

The new iBook G4 uses a totally different motherboard (based on the 12" PB's). That fact, along with Apple's overdo acknowledgment of the iBook G3 issue, assures us that at least that flaw has been corrected in the new models.

This model does not have the orignal hinge problem of the 500mhz/600mhz models, but will probably get the damaged cables problem in the hinge after some time and the logic board failure problem (covered by Apple).
You can go for it, you probably won't notice the 1st problem for a while (even if it appears, you'll notice it if you use airport and the screen is opened with an angle > 100° and your are far from the base station).
