It will work outside of your house, unless you have a really big house. It will work in your neighbors house if it is close enough. A good rule of thumb is about 250 feet.

It depends a lot: Is there a lot of metal in your walls? How many walls are there from point to point? Can you get line of sight? Are there any devices nearby that might cause interference?

iBooks have good reception, but in my parents' house (≈100 years old) I can't get a consistent link from one floor up.

I can see my next-door neighbor's wireless AP. The signal is pretty good too.

Be sure to WEP it.

You don't have an option. Any model of computer only supports either Airport or Airport Extreme. Since we're in the iBook forum, I'll assume you're looking at iBooks, so to be specific: iBook G4s can only use Airport Extreme (802.11g) and all older iBooks can only use regular Airport (802.11b). Luckily Airport Extreme is backwards compatible with Airport, so don't worry about compatibility. I don't know if one has better range than the other.

About the phones: Are they cordles? If so, what frequency do they communicate at (900MHz, 2.4GHz, etc.)?

Airport Extreme has better range then the older Airport. A friend of mine has en airport and he got much worse reception in my house then I do.

The fact that he has an powerbook 12" 867, and I have a ibook 12" 800 should't make any difference... i think
iBook G4 800mhz 12", 640mb ram, 60gb hdd, AirPort Extreme, Internal Bluetooth with osx 10.3.2 Panther
Palm Tungsten|T, TI-OMAP 144 MHz, 512mb SD, Internal Bluetooth with Palm OS 5.0

Actually it's well documented that the iBook has better receptioin then your friends PB. I think its due to it being plastic and the PB being aluminum if I'm not mistaken.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)
