a few questions about a ibook before i place my order.

1. i have been readin here and other places that i should max the ram or at least upgrade. so my main question is how easy is it o replace the memory my self? ( i have built PC's for years now but never touched a laptop ) as i have heard that you can buy it way cheaper later on.

2. has the logic board problem been fixed in the new models? (G4)

3. would it pay to get a podium of some sort? because ill be usein it alot on my bed and big chair. ( over heating )

danke peeps

1. Its very easy. Just make sure you have the right size screw driver and its a five minute affair.

2. Yes it has been fixed. I have not heard of any problems with the G4's

3. I have had no problems with it getting hot. Sometimes warm but not uncomfortable on bare skin. I would not worry about getting one.

Some additional notes:
1) There will be some RAM soldered onto the motherboard (I think it's 128MB or 256MB on current iBooks). This cannot be replaced. There is one RAM slot located underneath the keyboard, which is very easy to get to (a 5 minute affair as mentioned above).

2) Should be

3) It's a matter of preference, I suppose. Try it out for a week or two, and if you find it necessary, buy one. The CoolPad from www.roadtools.com is a good, affordable choice.

We've never had a heat problem with our iBook (G4, 800MHz), but another thing the podium/cool pad does is set the keyboard at a more ergonomic angle-if you get the right one. Take into account the height of your desk and the height of the podium before you buy, or you could wind up having to reach up to type.

This is where you can get instructions on how to upgrade the memory.

It's not that heat is a particular issue with iBooks, but you can't set ANY laptop on a bed and expect it to perform. If you're going to be using it while sitting in bed, get one of those pillows with a hard plastic surface or desktop on one side and use that. Works great.

Coolpad is good if you're going to be using it on a flat surface. The original coolpad would be enough to dissipate most heat, but you might want the angle that the super one provides.
He can be fixed -- you can't.

I think it would help ergonomically to get something like an iCurve that sits the iBook up pretty high. Then, get an external keyboard and mouse. It'll be more comfortable, like a desktop, while still being portable. I can use laptop keyboards just fine, but you really feel the difference when moving from a laptop to a desktop as far as ergonomics are concerned. You at least need a mouse - don't just use that crappy trackpad like so many laptop users do.

"That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario!" *wheeze*
