I heard a lot of discussion of heat problems with the littleAl (12" Powerbook). I had one & never noticed that it got hot.

However, I just got a 15" Powerbook with Superdrive 1.25GHZ and it DOES get hot. I never had the 12" get much above 120F on temp monitor. This 15" gets in the 130+ range pretty quick when doing anything intensive.

I noticed it isn't just mine, a friend of mine bought one a couple weeks ago (switched from PC) and complained of the heat.

I didn't really think much of it, just figured he wasn't used to the aluminum or something, but MAN was he right.

Why aren't there many discussions about this? I guess not that many people use their laptops in their laps?

I have a 17 inch PowerBook, and I only notice it get warm to hot when on AC Power. Whenever I use it on battery power it stays cool.

i'm with you. mine gets hot sometimes to the point of burning flesh! when i sent mine in for the screen fix, they said it was within normal limits for temps...it's not a laptop, rather an ultra portable. guess there's a diff in acceptable temps. also, i rarely hear the fan come on. it can be blazing hot at the rear corners, and still no fan. then, when it seems no hotter than normal, it will kick on.

I have a 15" aluminum with the SD and it stays cool most of the time until I start doing something that's more intensive than just wordprocessing, surfing, etc. Then it starts getting a bit hot but not that hot where it would be uncomfortable to lay on your lap (true I almost always have long pants on). The fan kicks in and does its job without being intrusive (aka too noisey). I can't complain at all. Now my SD is noisy and sometimes sounds clunkish but that's another story.

My 15" Al PB gets warm when using processor hogging applications over extended periods of time. However, PBs are metal, and metal transfers heat. You can't compare it to using a plastic case that doesn't hold heat well. I expect my PB to get warm, but it's never gotten to the point where it was uncomfortable or capable of burning. A little warmth is the price you pay for a lean, clean and quiet Aluminum/Titanium powerhouse machine.

the G4 makes a lot of heat
the case is aluminum and helps dissipate heat
the laptop is thin which means very limited air circulation

this adds up to a laptop that's going to be warm, especially under anything processor intensive.

I agree it is hot. I agree it uses the aluminum to dissapate heat. But WOW, this 15" is the hotest laptop I have ever used. The 12" never got anywhere near this hot. The fan came on to keep it cool.

I just don't remember hearing a lot of discussion about the heat of the 15". It is a very FAST, but very HOT machine .

Exactly. I suspect that in the summer the heat will get annoying, but in the cooler months it's almost a nice thing.
