Is your PowerBook G4 12-inch running hotter than blazes? Try this fix to reduce the operating temperature of the smallest PowerBook G4.
Delete the power management preference file located in /private/var/db/SystemConfiguration/
Either through unix or if you have it hooked up with target disk mode you can see these invisible files. (or by using "Go to Folder..." and typing in the path in the Finder then delete com.apple.PowerManagement.xml)
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing Shift-Control-Option-power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
Wait 5 seconds.
Press the power button to restart the computer.
That apparently fixes the "my 12" powerbook is so hot!" thing.

I first saw that tip posted a long time ago in the Apple 12" discussion forums. March 30, 2003. Where did Powerpage get the tip--shouldn't they attribute the tip to someone? Anyway, the original thread is 114 posts long, well worth reading.

Question: Does this file still exist in Panther? The original tip was for Jaguar (I'm still running Jaguar.)

Sorry to burst your bubble but this is usually a temporary fix. When and if you EVER do a manual customization of your Energy Saver preferences the "fix" you just did will be moot. If you NEVER, ever touch or alter these preferences and leave them set at the defaults you just might be alright.

I was just posting what they had put on the site. I don't plan on testing this out since It's probably/hopefully will be fixed in the next Panther update. If not I'm not too worried since I now have this cooling pad nad I'm not too worried about the heat anymore.

another thing to consider is the date of march 03 means that trick was done with jaguar in mind. chances are it won't cause any problems deleting that file in panther but be aware.
