I have a G3 bronze powerbook (version 9.1, plenty of ram) running Netscape 4.8 and i want to upgrade to 6.1, but everytime I download the software and try to install it I get all kinds of error messages, such as mozilla not found (it's there) and something else I can't figure out. The wizard comes up and wants me to put all my information in (incoming, outgoing email, etc.) but it doesn't stick. That is, when I log on again I get the error messages and the wizard asking for the same information.
I can't bypass the wizard and use the preferences either. When I specify a home page it says it will take place the next time I log on and the next time I have the same problems as above plus the home page defaults to apple.
And why is there a search engine in the email window?

If this is understandable, I hope someone can help me.

you would really enjoy using Safari as it's pretty fast and user friendly. However, you'll need OS X. I personally have Bronze Keyboard powerbook (Pismo) and OS X runs great (i have panther). If you have alot of OS 9 applications, perhaps you can use them still running classic in OS X.

In my experience Netscape 6.1 was very slow and big. Not a pleasure at all. Thats why I use mozilla now. For a Lombard this will be a better choice.

Mozilla can take over Netcape Mail folders with no problems but it is only available for OS X.

Netscape 6? My word Netscape 6 was a dog. If you're running OS 9, upgrade to the final OS 9 release of Mozilla. (There's actually a slightly upgraded version put out by an independent software group; I can dig up the link if you wish.) But don't run Netscape 6 - it was an abomination. It's really too bad you don't have access to Firefox, which is Mozilla done right (and the future of the project).

I have a friend that is limited to running 9.2.2 on her powerbook (you should consider upgrading from 9.1 to 9.2.2. as it is free upgrade that you can download). She was using Netscape 7.02, the last release for OS 9 and having lots of problems. I did some research and found that Mozilla 1.3 was the last release for classic (Netscape is based on the Mozilla code base). Some dudes took the source for Mozilla 1.3 and added lots of bug fixes from further versions and branded it WaMCom. I would *strongly* suggest using WaMCom over Netscape 7.02. More bug fixes, stronger code base, more features, more or less still being maintained, etc.

Download it here:

And see my thread about installing adblock on this version here:

Good luck!
