Last summer, the factory combo drive in my TiBook 800 broke. I could only insert a CD 1/4 of the way in the slot. I went to the Apple Store on Michigan Ave. in Chicago and was quoted around $320 to have it fixed.

Last Monday, I finally decided to fix my laptop so I ordered a SuperDrive from Other World Computing and it arrived today. I just finished installing it. The installation took about 10 minutes. I booted up the computer, installed the driver that I got from OWC, and now I can burn. I can burn in the Finder, iTunes, and iPhoto. Tomorrow, I am going to go to the Apple store and buy iLife so I can try out iDVD. The SuperDrive is fast - 2X DVD-R/8X DVD Read + 16X CD-R/4X CD-RW/24X CD. I highly recommend this upgrade if you have an older TiBook.

Sounds awesome! Any idea if the same thing is available for 12" Powerbooks (I couldn't find the appropriate upgrade at OWC's website)?

And who said Macs aren't upgradeable!

I'm not sure if you can upgrade the 12" PowerBook G4 867 MHz. Do you know the model number of the combo drive that it comes with? The combo drive that comes with the TiBook is a Panasonic CW-8121. My guess, if they use the same combo drive in the 12", then you should be able to upgrade it.

It's a Toshiba (Matshita) CW-8122..very similar model number with your previous drive. Don't know if this means it is upgradeable though. Wouldn't that also depend on the accessibility of the drive, like to actually get to it to do the upgrade?

is the OWC superdrive guaranteed to work on all [future] versions of iDVD?

Is there a way for apple to stop the OWC drive from functioning?
