The internal HD on my 2001 iBook 500 is getting very noisy.
Question:
If I buy an external HD, can I actually turn off the internal so it no longer spins? If so, can someone steer me to instructions?
Thanks!

There are circumstances where you can boot off of a firewire hard drive (be it another target disked mac, or even and iPod) Just so long as there is a valid system on the drive.
I wouldn't recommend making it your primary system, firewire is one of those things that dont necessarily start immediately when you power up the system, so it may or may not see it all the time if you power up from a shut down state.
Good luck with that though, and be careful.

At first, I thought it was all fan noise. But it's evident as soon as I power up and never stops. Clicks would be fine! This is more of a spinning, mid-to-high pitched sound of some volume.
My daughter has a newer iBook, & hers is incredibly quiet.

You could save up for a replacement internal drive instead. They cost more than the external solution, but I'd hate to be in a position where I'd have to bring the external drive everytime I bring my laptop with me.

If hds start to make noise its highest time to replace them. IBM drives have been notorious for this. First they make noise, then they crash which results in loss of all data.
So be smart, save our data (maybe on your daughters iBook) and get a new, fast and shiny internal drive. An external drive is only good for the desk. As soon as you go on the road you again risk your data.
Opening the iBook will void your warranty. So if it is still under Apple Care you better take your iBook to an Apple certified technician or to an Apple Store.
Doing the replacement yourself is only recommended, if you know how to treat electronics. Its not so easy.
