I have the g4 ibook w/ 256... the apple site says the max is 640mb - would i have to remove the 256mb installed and put a 128 and 512k to make this happen?
At this point I'm just inclined to get another 256mb and call it a day.

Your iBook has 128MB non-removable on the main board and 128MB in the user upgrade slot located under the keyboard. Remove the 128MB and just add a 512MB module to take it to 640MB.
