We have an iBook G3 933 MHZ (under original warranty and Apple Care)which has just begun a persistent clicking noise which seems to be coming from the battery compartment. The only way to stop the noise is to take the battery out, replace it, and restart the machine. Also noticing a loss of performance, especially noticeable on the web.
Had it in to a Mac repair shop last week, and they could find nothing wrong. They suggested we ship it to Apple. This problem seems pretty strange; any similar experiences or advice?
Thanks!

The only clicking noise I hear from mine is from the APM system in the hard drive.
The disks in the portables have a power manager which puts the reading heads on a resting mode when-ever possible. The clicking comes when the drive spins up again or something. Can't say if this is in any way related to your problem thought.

Check the CD-ROM. It could be the optical head clicking. I had the same problem with an iBook 700. When I ejected the cd-rom module the clicking stopped. When I reinserted the module it started atgain. Could be unrelated but it's worth a shot.

Back up your data immediately. It may have something to do with the battery compartment ... or it may be the symptom of an imminent hard drive failure. I heard a persistent loud clicking on my 600 iBook last summer, and fortunately had enough time to back up the important files to my wife's Powerbook (thanks, FireWire target mode!) before the drive failed entirely the next day. Maybe yours is something else, but don't take any chances.

What OS are you using...10.2.8? 10.2.8 causes a clicking sound in the iBook.

A clicking noise is indicative of a hard drive problem.
Back up your data ASAP, if you drive doesn't fail soon it will fail at some point. Hope it's still under warranty.
See if running disk utility does anything, I doubt it will but it's worth a shot.
