If you are in the US, look at the '3' key, it's just there. On french keyboards it's the key below esc.
Did I miss something?

Pianomac, it's shift-3. You may also know it as the pound key. What kind of keyboard layout are you using?

I'm using an ibook G4 bought in the UK, so shift-3 gives me £, which is actually printed on the keyboard above the 3. Anyhow I figured it out, it turn out I have to hit option-3, #####

I don't understand why apple didn't print it on the keyboard though?

Annoying, isn't it?

Because we use § and ± all the time, and £ never

Someday I'll reconfigure my keyboard... I'm a British programmer, so I use ( ) more than 8 and 9, and £ and # more than 3 or some other numbers. It would be interesting to have a 150-key keyboard

Erm, pardon? You bought an iBook in the UK, and you're wondering why you have a pound key and not a hash key???

Here in NZ we use the US keyboard but I've set mine to the UK layout because I need to easily access the pound symbol. Which means my 3 key shows #, not £ on the keyboard! But then I can't remember the last time I ever had to use #.

You can just change your keyboard setting to US and it will go back to shift-3 for #. You'll just have to live with the £ symbol printed on the key.
