I sent my powerbook in for repair last friday(February 27, 2004) to replace my flaking case. I was really worried because after I had sent it in, I thought that I would have to send it again to replace the flexing hinge above the DVD/CDRW drive. Well, apple care did such a terrific job, going above and beyond in repairing my Powerbook.

So In review, I sent in my Powerbook for:
1)Paint Flaking off

When I received it, Apple care:
1)Replaced the Dark Silver part of my powerbook(top only), as well as the white silver "edges" that were flaking off.
2)I got a new trackpad, new power on button.
3)They installed new powerbook feet. Three were missing before I sent it in.
They fixed the flexing part of the case right above the DVD/CDRW drive.

I did NOT expect apple to do all of this for me, based on the horror stories of past topics that I had read through.

And no...I do not work for Apple. I was actually fixing this PB up to sell. Now, I'm gonna keep it! It's practically brand new!

Apple care RULES!

Paul
Please could you stay awhile to share my grief, for its such a lovely day to have to always feel this way.

Every dealer here in Germany keeps telling me that paint flaking is just cosmetical and not covered by AC. Do i miss something?

Yes you are missing out. A While back, apple agreed to fix all the machines that had the flaking paint issue (provided you were under warranty still...i think) They may have covered ALL Tibooks, or maybe just the ones under warranty....however, they were replacing the Trackpad assy, which includes the power button, trackpad, mouse button, speakers, etc, etc.

Thanks for that info! Have you any URL, maybe Apple Knowledge base one, that i can cite if my dealer refuses to fix the flaking casing?

The easiest thing to do is contact a local Apple retail store (if there is one). I've read in some places that the mac genius there will take a look at the machine, and determine to warranty it or not...hope you have good schmoozing skills! If there isn't a local Apple retail store, then I would call apple...they will usually send out a box for you to ship the machine in....

When you sent in the TiBook, how long did it take for Apple to repair it? Did Apple return it in the same condition (I mean all the programs and information) still on the HD, or was the HD wiped and all info lost?

Thanks!!!

My TiBook had a quickie fix (loose power connector...replaced) done to it about a year ago. Same with my iBook/500 a few years ago (loud hard drive...they fixed the padding around the drive and it was perfect after that). Turnaround was two days each for both repairs, but I work up the street from the Airborne Express dropoff/pickup station, so that might be cheating.

I actually wipe my hard drive with a new OS installation before sending it to Apple. I suggest backing up your data as they make no promises.
