i recently picked up a sandisk cruzer mini 128mb usb 2.0 memory key to accompany my 15" 1.25 pb to school. normally, it works great with the pb. however, at times, my pb will not recognize the cruzer unless i restart. this only happens when i first put the cruzer in the usb...and then only occassionally. after it's in and working it's never had a problem. there are no such problems with xp. logging out doesn't even fix the problem. i've tried removing it, replacing it, trying the other usb, etc. has anyone else experienced this, or have suggestions on how to remedy? thanks for any advice.

Yeah, I've had the exact same problem with the exact same model of both key drive and computer... I have no idea how to fix it, though. I just bought a different brand, and it's worked fine. FWIW, the Cruzer didn't work at all in my partner's iBook, I think it might be a problem w/ them and Macs.

that's not good news. well, it's good that you found one that works. this problem is rare, but it's a pain to have such a stable computer that i never have to restart...only to do so because of this drive.

Same problem here, I have two of them which aren't recognized until I restart. I'm not sure if its all USB devices or just the Sandisk memory keys.

the pb never recognizes them unless you restart? mine rarely has the problem, but when it does, it's no fun.

I have two CruzerMinis (256MB each) and had trouble mounting them a few times. I couldn't even rename the drives. I just reformatted them using Apple's Disk Utility and it worked other than seeing all the invisible desktop files. Then I reformated them both again but checking the "Install OS 9 drivers" option. Now both of them mount all the time and the invisible desktop files are hidden, like they are supposed to be. No problems ever since.

I have used them to transfer files among my G4 PowerMac, PC laptop (Fujitsu) and several G3 iMacs at work.

I have a 256MB Integral USB 1 drive and no OS X machines will recognise it. If you plug it into my iMac (15" flat panel) it says it needs formatting but if you do it freezes disk utility and you have to give up.

It does the same thing on my friends Tibook but it works fine with OS 9 (luckily i use it mainly with my old OS 9 iMac) and with all the PCs i've tried it on.

Is this a common thing...macs having problems with USB flash drives?

Formatting the sandisk cruzer w/ disk utility improved reliability and increased data transfer speeds.

I think it was Macintouch that discussed this very issue a week or two ago. (The other option is MacFixIt, but I think it was the former.) The new security update might have made some improvements. Also -- I believe formatting was an issue and I believe I remember reading something about power issues -- if it is a USB2.0 drive it might have trouble mounting unless it's in a powered USB port, whereas there are no difficulties if it's a USB 1.0 drive.

All I know is -- I have a FUJI drive (USB2.0) that I couldn't get to mount at all on my 12-in PB (it had performed just fine earlier). I did the security update -- which needed a restart -- and all was fine. I never had ANY trouble with a 64 MB Sony drive (1.0) which, unfortunately, is somewhere in this house...

I had to format mine on Windows XP becasue otherwise it wouldn't mount on the PCs at school.
