I've had my ibook for 3 years now, so it's probably too late to fix this, but for future reference, what is the proper way to clean the screen.

I notice when the computer is off or in sleep mode and I can see the screen all in black, that there are smudges and lines on the screen itself.

Looks like just permenant damage from years of use.

Is this normal and can it be avoided?

What is the proper way to clean notebook screens?

I just use a soft, damp cloth. Works fine.

Soft damp cloth as mentioned above, and then wipe with a soft dry cloth. Your screen will be as new.

I use the 3M Scotch-Brite Dusting Cloth which is very effective against fingerprint marks, dust, or other blemishes on the LCD screen. Its non-abrasive, so it doesn't scratch the surface. Useful for general-purpose optical lens, too.
