I took delivery of a 12" powerbook yesterday, and after confirming that it worked, put a brand new 512MB SODIMM from Crucial in it. I ran the Apple Hardware Extended test, and it reported that everything was fine. Since then, the machine has been locking up randomly. I took out the SODIMM, leaving me with 256mb of ram, but everything is working fine, and the machine hasn't locked up once.

Before I return the SODIMM to Crucial, are there any memory testing programs that I should run? I'd like to confirm that the SODIMM is the problem, before I go through the RMA hassle.

If you have Applecare than you got a TechTool Deluxe disk that has an extensive Ram testing module. When I say extensive - I mean that it can take a while to run (depending upon amount of ram it has to test). I have no idea what all it is doing. Certainly it writes data into and out of memory and than checks it....Anyhoot - you might give that spin...

I ended up just returning the RAM, and getting a replacement. The replacement works fine; I loaded up enough apps to be out of 'real' memory, and had no problems. The previous chip would cause the computer to lock up during this test. Both chips pass the Apple Hardware Test, so I don't know how useful that test is.
