Hi everybody,

I have just joined the group & wanted to see if anyone could help me with a problem I am having. I have recently purchased the new 15" G4 Powerbook & I am attempting to install 'Panther' onto an external lacie firewire hard drive but it is just not having it. It gets almost to the end of the install then gives me the 'Kernal panic' black window telling me I have to re-start my computer. Not only that it refuses to boot from an external hard drive with the latest version of 'Panther' already installed, giving me the same black window. Other than that the computer works fine. Is it a case of 'does not play well with others'?
I had no problems of this nature with my old G4 powerbook. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Berni.

Have you gone tot he LaCie website to make sure you have the latest firmware on the firewire HD? Some of the earlier firmware versions are not compatible with Panther.

OK, I have figured out my problem, thanks to reading some posts on this forum about RAM issues. When I purchased my PB from MacMall I also purchased a 512 Kingston RAM upgrade which was supposed to be compatible with my new computer. Boy, was that a bad move. I have gone through all kinds of hair pulling trying to get my new system to work thinking that my new computer had compatibility issues with my external HD's.
It turns out that if I remove the 'upgrade' my computer will boot from my externals & also install a new OS no problem.
I will be returning the RAM to MacMall & informing them of my experience. I hope this helps other people that may have this problem in the future.

Berni.
