About three months after I got my iBook I noticed a small black line on the right side corner of the palmrest/trackpad case part. I originally thought this just a stain or something, but then about two months later I noticed that the line had spread. It was a crack, it slowly spread downwards towards the bottom case where it has finally stopped spreading, but now the whole palmrest case part is deformed. Where the CD drive is the case sticks outwards and the palmrest is now very loose and wobbly.

My iBook is still under warranty and this crack formed through no fault of my own, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. Do you guys think this is covered under the warranty?

One a side note: Do Apple Retail stores all around do in-store warranty repairs? I don't want to have to ship this thing off to get fixed if it's not necessary.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello. I just want to say that I have what seems to be the same problem. On the right corner of the palm rest of my G3 iBook (baught this autumn) there is a rugged "x"-formed crack just where the case rounds the corner. It doesn't go all the way, but I'm afraid it will develop into a full crack, thus deforming the palm rest or something. Anyway, this is not the way it should be, so I think we'd be entitled to free repair. The question is how to prove that it actually isn't caused by some external cause etc. And, as you point out, it's not a very tempting option to be without the book for weeks or months.
