I just bought a new powerbook and would like to know if I have warranty left from my old powerbook is that warranty transferrable. I know that I can get a prorated refund from the unused warranty. But can it be transferred to the new equipment.

I would hazard a no, but then why would, how much time is left on applecare. Why not get a prorated refund and then purchase another one, that way you get maximum coverage.

The warranty goes with the equipment. Your old Powerbook remains under warranty, even if you sell it. A warranty protects one machine for the life of the warranty.

If you wanted one buyer to be protected for multiple machines, it wouldn't be called a warranty. It would be called insurance.

Apple Care is transferable to the new owner. The new owner must register with Apple.

I've sold several Apple units over the years that still had Applecare left on them. In order to properly transfer, the original owner must write a letter to applecare (the original owner needs to call them to get details)explaining that he/she wants to transfer Applecare to the new owner. The new owner has to contact Apple to register. Then Apple will send a letter to both parties explaining that the transfer was completed.

From what I have heard the original owner is almost irrelevant in applecare. It is the machine that is important. I have a machine that was not purchased by me and all I did was ring up applecare to change the details they had for applecare. No letters, nothing, a simple phonecall was all that was required.

That may be so, but I have had to do the process I listed above. As a matter of a fact, I just sold a machine about 2 months ago & had to fax the letter, make the calls, etc.

If I was buying a machine with an Applecare warranty (used), I would call Applecare & make sure it was properly transfered to my name.

No, you can not transfer the unused AppleCare from your old PB to your new one. The AppleCare coverage applies only to the original machine, as it is registered by serial number of the computer. If you sell the old machine, the warranty transfers, and you have to buy new AppleCare for the new machine. I don't know who told you that you can get a prorated refund from the unused warranty; but that's simply not true. AppleCare is not only a service; it's also a product, with the diagnostic disc included, and that's not refundable or prorated.

why would you have to do all that work for apple care. What if for example you bought a power book as a gift to me for example do you have to transfer the apple care? no.

Here's what I know.

If you buy over a PB which still have the one-year warranty intacted, you can get the previous owner to transfer the registration to your name. You can proceed to get AppleCare Protection Plan yourself for the next two years.

I sold a PB to a colleague and called AppleCare to do the transfer of ownership. He went on to buy APP himself.

As for PB with APP, the seller should help out in calling to AppleCare to transfer ownership.

In conclusion, APP is transferrable owner-to-owner. And not machine-to-machine.
