Well yes, you only have one year to purchase it.

No. You must buy AppleCare BEFORE your regular warranty ends.

Note that it doesn't matter when during your original warranty you buy AppleCare: it extends the original warranty by two years (giving you the cumulative 3 years warranty, based on the date of purchase of the Mac).

Be sure to get it, though -- one single out-of-warranty repair will cost more than AppleCare.

I bought Applecare for my 12" PB at 2buystore.com. Got it for $277.00. You have to be able to show Apple that you purchased it before your warranty runs out and they will honor it. Shop online.

I gave Apple a chance to match this price or maybe throw me something in the mix at their regular price. They couldn't do it.

Well when you get the AppleCare, you then call/mail/go online to register it. Then Apple has it on record in their computer system, and from then on, you don't even need to have the receipt or anything when you take it in for repair.

Definitely be certain that you purchase Apple Care BEFORE your year warranty runs out. I had fully intended to do that on my 15" TiBook but let the date slip by me. I was just a couple of days past the year purchase date, but I was out of luck. I called Apple, pleaded my case, but the bottom line was: I missed the deadline - no sale.

Yeah, Tooki. I tried that. I bought AppleCare online on the day of my one year anniversary. When it arrived at my house a few days later I went online to register it. Since I bought my PB direct from Apple, it was in the system, they new the deadline had passed and they made me show proof that I had purchased it in time via fax.

My confusion came from an Apple rep calling me a few days before trying to sell me AppleCare. He was actually giving me an extended deadline of about a week if I bought through them. Good thing I didn't wait till later to buy from the 3rd party. I nearly blew it.

BTW. It just so happens that the latch broke on my PB after I got AppleCare. I haven't sent it in yet (too busy).

I know I should back up before mailing it off. Are my chances good that I won't need to restore when I get it back for this kind of repair?

I'm in two minds about buying Apple Care. I've never had a problem EVER that required sending my computer back to the manufacturer, with nearly a dozen laptops in the past 12+ years, both PCs and Macs. Why are you guys so for Apple Care? I don't get it. If I didn't read threads like this, I wouldn't even think twice about it.

Lucky man, my previous laptop was a 500 MHz Pismo, bad dvd drive, bad screen, no AppleCare, go figure.

My actual 17" PB has a bad RAM module (Transcend), but it is not an Apple issue.

I travel a lot. My PB is constantly moving about. Lots of chances for things to happen although I am quite careful. Since I usually hold onto a computer for 3 years or so, (my iMac is well past that) I think it is good insurance.

Plus, you get free phone calls to Apple if you have any issues or questions.

I have had insurance on my house and have never had to use it in over 20 years. If I didn't have it, probably would have needed it.

But that's what this board is for!

I've been a Mac user for many years and I have had my share of hardware failures, but all of them in the first year of ownership. If I had purchased Applecare, I would have been out thousands without ever having needed it. Of course your milage may vary.

I ordered mine the other day. I just went back and checked the date of the original purchase. I made it under the wire by one day. :-) And to think I was originally going to wait until tomorrow to buy it.

Tomster,
I couldn't agree with you more. I'm not going to buy Apple Care. If my Mac fails and I end up having to pay much more to fix it, I'll learn my lesson. But until then, I'm hoarding.

Thanks
