so I had a G3700 ibook w. 640 ram... and by good fortune i ended up getting a G4ibook w. standard 256 ram... and this damn this is slooow ! i KNOW os x really needs a lot of RAM, but this is ridiculous. Even switching from Word to safari -- or if i have too many windows open in safari -- it really drags. i already ordered my 512 ram, but i wouldn't think a standard ready to order ibook that is 2 years later would run this slow.

thoughts?
is it JUSt the RAM?

Most likely, yes. OS X really needs, IMHO, 512MB to be usable for basic tasks, and since RAM is so cheap, I think 768-1024MB is better for power users.

1GB RAM in an iBook is about $400. I wouldn't call that cheap.

Check www.ramseeker.com
You can get 512MB for about $100 or 1GB for $300. I think the 512 would be sufficient for good performance, and is a better value.

When you run out of RAM, the hard disk has to be used. The hard disks are still spinning at the same speed; or are at least still hundreds of times slower than RAM.
