Hey all,
Was wondering if there was any kind of 'lemon' law regarding computers like there exists for cars. I bought a new (not refurbished, from MacMall) rev. A powerbook 12" SuperDrive a couple weeks ago, and it seems to be disintegrating before my eyes.

When i first took it out of the box, the little silver button on the battery (to test the charge) fell off into my lap. Not the most encouraging sign in the world.

As soon as I started using it, I noticed it had narcolepsy, and didn't like sleep at all. I have to click 'sleep' in the Apple menu 7-8 times before the computer finally responds, and closing the lid doesn't do anything at all (the computer stays awake, keeps right on going). In addition to this, when it finally DOES go to sleep, it will randomly wake up in the middle of sleep, spin the hard drive, flash the monitor five times or so, then go back to sleep (or stay on). This is terrifying, as I can't carry it around in my backpack at school for fear of it waking up and damaging the hard drive. When I DO have to take it out and about, I'll often take it out to find a completely dead battery due to a random wake up while I was carrying it around.

Then last week I started it up and the monitor wouldn't even turn on, I could only use the computer through an external monitor.

On top of that, every few restarts, the keyboard malfunctions, and half the keys don't work. I'm sending it in to AppleCare in a few days, but I'm just scared that I have bought one of 'those' computers and am going to be facing these kinds of problems for years to come. Is there anything I can do or say to Apple about this? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
cheers,
Nathan

p.s. I haven't installed any strange third-party software since I purchased the PB, just the usual (photoshop, ms office x). i have 3rd party ram installed, but even after swapping back in the OEM ram, all the symptoms are still apparent.

I wouldn't bother trying to get it to work if it is that faulty straight form the box.

Return it, or call Apple and register it as a DOA.

Do you have Mail running? If you do, try opening up Preferences and changing the "Check for new mail" setting to "manually."

Scratch that, return the laptop.
