I do not need a new laptop today. I Probably will in a few months. Should I go for the G4 or the G5. Can someone describe the pro's or con's of each.

G5 is a better processor, obviously.
New G5's (rev B, if you will) run cooler too. Which is a big deal in a laptop.
Apple HeatBook line could use a cooler CPU for sure.....

Better processor means more money, right? Is the additional benefit worth the additional price?

Vague answer for sure, but "it depends".
I always prefer the latest and greatest if I can afford it.
Given the heat output of the current G4 CPU in the PowerBook series, I would DEFINITELY wait for an upgrade to the G5.
The new G5 supposedly uses 35% of the power wattage that the current G5 uses. This translates roughly into 1/3 the heat output as well.
Ever use a PowerBook 12". Nuclear hot on the bottom and more than warm on the left palm rest. CPU temp soars when doing anything other than simply reading mail or web browsing.
The new G5's would help alleviate this problem.
And how bad to you need the laptop? Right away or can you wait a few months?

The G4 7447A is relatively cool chip using a relatively cool system controller. (Motorola recently announced it, but so far it is not used in any Apple products.) A low power G5 970FX would also be a relatively cool chip, but the system controller may be warmer than the G4's.

Don't go by Motorola's and IBM's numbers. The numbers are not directly comparable. IBM does not release max power output specs. Take a look at this picture:
Link
Note that it specs the G5 2.0 970FX "max" at 55 Watts (per CPU). This is Apple's number, and a number that has never been released by IBM. IBM only specs the "typical" power output, at 24.5 Watts.
I'm waiting for a G5 1.6+ PowerBook myself, but a G4 1.4+ would make a reasonable PowerBook too.

if you honestly can wait, then wait. if you need one now, don't wait.
