this is the first time owning a mac... so i need help to understand the OS-X... anyways... we ordered the upgrade from 30->40 gb... but under 'Mac Harddisk' ... it says 28.5GB available.... does that sound right? With all the included software/OS ... does that take up over 10gb?? thanks ... so far I love my new mac!

It could, depending on how much stuff you have installed.
Open System Profiler (it should be in your Applications/Utilities folder) to get detailed info on all the hardware installed on your computer, including the hard drive capacity.

Also, if you select the harddisk on the sidebar in the Finder, and press command-I for "Get Info", same as going to the File menu (or action menu [the wheel at the top of the Finder toolbar) and click "Get Info", you will see that actual capacity of the disk.
