About to upgrade to Panther.

Can anyone guide me through process of completely wiping my iBook prior to installing 10.3, so that it's like factory new?

Can OS X disk utility do this or is other software required for a clean install?

Important docs and apps are backed up to CD.

Just boot on Panther CD (hold 'C' during startup to boot on the CD), then select the appropriate install type (do not choose upgrade) and make sure you select the option to initialize the disk in the installer.

My ibook was dying...it would work fine then get hot and just almost freeze up. It never completey stopped working though..just would almost stop ..and would work fine again after I let it rest a few hours.

I took it in to get it looked at and they said the hard drive needed replaced.

However I could still get it to boot off a cd..so I decided to reinstall fresh and erase.

I just put in the Panther cd's and did the option of a clean install with erase.

and it is working perfectly...for 3 days now.

so far.

*fingers crossed*

Sweet. I'm hoping that a fresh erase and install should kick some life into my machine (it's hardly at death's door but it's been zippier)

Probably a really dumb question. But what apps does Panther include? Do I need to back up stuff like iPhoto/Safari/Appleworks/Utilities - or can I use the software CD that came with the iBook?

Also, I think my machine is dual boot - Sys Pref lets me choose the startup drive. Presumably Panther would kill this dual boot capability?

no, you can still dual boot. You will need to install OS9 again, as the bootable version will not be on the Panther disk.

If you have an OS9 disk, just install it before or after your Panther install. If you need to pull OS9 from you restore disks, it will be a bit trickier. Someone can help you pull those files off or you can restore everything and then upgrade the OSX portion.
