Ok, I have a new (too me) iBook G3 900 with a 60gb hard drive. I would like to run Panther, OS9 and Yellow Dog (just because I can!). Now I can handle the first two, but had some questions on YDL.

First, recommend a good partitions strategy. I was planning a small partition for OS9 (about a GB or 2), and the rest for OSX and Linux. How do I go about partitioning.

Second, which should I install first?

Third, Any gotchas on this particular machine? I have failed in the past with getting Airport to work.

thanks for the help.

First, make sure your model really is supported. Specifically, if the video card isn't supported then you'll have to wait.

I think you have to install YDL last in order to get yaboot configured correctly. You could do it in OpenFirmware afterwards, but that's not for the faint of heart.

If I were you I wouldn't bother with OS 9, unless as merely for Classic. In that case, I'd just put it on the same partition as OS X. On an iBook your space is limited, and I bet you'll be kicking yourself somewhere down the line that you have essentially 1 or 2 unusable GB. You may not experience this, but when I had triple boot going on my iBook G3/800 the colors would be all messed up when I booted into OS 9. Nothing I could do would fix it. Again, YMMV.

Here are a couple links:

http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/suppor...hp?hw_cat_id=3

http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/installation/

One is where you can download the install manual in PDF and the other is where you can find out about your iBook. It looks like you should be good to go with your laptop.

I put OSX and OS9 on the same partition and have another for Yellow Dog. I installed without a hitch on my iBook 700 but I haven't tried it on my iBook 900. I didn't worry about the modem and I never tried to get Airport to work.

You will have to do a clean install of Panther and OS9 (make sure you get the latest ISO's so you don't have conflicts with Panther). Only format the partitions you want to install Panther and OS9 on. Leave the other as free space.

If you've never installed Linux before:

YDL's installer is quite nice. Read the install manual. It will take you step by step. You could pretty much choose all defaults and be fine. Don't get in a hurry if you've never done it before. Remember what you entered as your root password. Make sure that you make a user account at the same time. YDL can take 1.5GB to 5GB (more or less) space depending on what you want installed. Also, you can get a Red Hat 9 book and be set since YDL and Red Hat are so much alike. Good luck.

Just wanted to let you know that I installed YDL on my 900. Installed without a problem. Airport card is good to go. It is recognized without having to configure. Running updates using yum right now. So far so good.
