You may have to call your phone company. The # can be different from region to region.
The start-up chime may not be happening if you have the volume on mute when you shut the computer down.

Did you try *70, then wait for a pause (add a comma to the dial string)?

You failed to mention which country you are in. That usually means you are American. Was I right?

Ooh. Good point. Where do you come from? And what do you you mean when you say no sound? Do you mean when the iBook is starting up (loss of the startup chime) or loss of the modem progress tones (the beeping and shrieking noses it makes when connecting to the Internet)? If it's the later, you can turn the sound on in the modem section of Network pane.

Try zapping the PRAM (hold down COMMAND+OPTION+P+R keys while it's starting up and hold them until you hear— well, I guess you'll just have to hold them down for let's say 15 seconds).
When it's starting up, it should rely on it's PRAM (or maybe NVRAM—not sure with these New World ROM Macs) to supply the sound level while starting up, although usually, it won't mute the startup tone.

Not to be rude, but for the benefit of international MacNN readers or non-native english speakers, can we limit the use of AOL-speak ("n e 1" instead of "anyone") please?
