1- when was the pbg4 released?
2- anybody know if by anychance it could happen this summer?

i want to buy a laptop but i am not sure if i should buy the g4 or wait for the g5 .. i would die if i bought the g4 and like in the summer the g5s come out.

i know there is very few information about this topic available since apple doesn't tell you what they are releasing until very close to release date but any info would help

1. I believe it was around Macworld NY last year they came out. It was sometime last year. They have gone through at least one revision except for the 15.
2. Anything can happen this summer. If you are talking about a G5 powerbook coming out probably not. No one knows what will be released and when it will be released. The Powerbooks are probably due for one more revision at the very least before the G5 powerbook is released.

No one knows with Apple what will come out and when. You should just buy the Machine if you need it now. If you don't, just wait and see what comes out. Buy the G4 it's a great laptop. Also if you follow the don't buy rev A rule then you would be waiting even longer on it.

Even closer to the time it's only speculation by the rumor sites. No one knows until Apple releases something.

I say buy and be done with it. If it a G5 does come out this summer sell the G4 and get one. Otherwise you will always be waiting for the next greatest thing to be released.

I agree. Determine what your needs are now and then decide. We can alway sit on the fence and let things continue to pass by, but you may be missing out on an opportunity to enjoy now. Also remember kinks have been worked our pretty well on the current PB G4. I would be cautious myself of the first issue of a PB G5 - I usually am of first runs of new machines. But then this is just me and my view. Good luck and enjoy. I like my PB G4 Al.

1. I believe the first G4 PowerBook was released in 2001,
In January of 2003 the 17" and 12' AL PB's werer release.
In September of 03 the line was refreshed adding FW800 and revision 1 of the 15" PB's.

2. Apple has been distancing itself from Macworld (boston) since they moved from NY, so my guess is no, perhaps either this spring or this fall. That doens't mean a G5 PB, that could be 6 months away or another year. The bottom line though is Apple keeps the news of product annoucements pretty tight so your guess is as good as anyones. If you have a need now, buy it. There will always be a faster model being released around the corner so just enjoy what you have.

A couple of things to keep in mind with the G5 PB, when it gets released. first people complain about battery life and heat right now, the G5 afaik still consume more power and produce more heat then the G4. Also being such a major change in the architecture there's bound to tbe issues related so do you want to be on the bleeding edge? Buy a PB now, if the G5 PB is released wait until things are shaken out and sell the G4 on ebay, then purchase the new one.

convinced .. i am ordering mine this weekend .. i know i am gonna die if i buy it and they release the info in june .. ohh well .. i am gonna need it big time this summer .. might as well get it now.

i was thinking .. most likely .. the powerbook g5 will look the same as the powerbook g4 right? since it from the same model .. the changes will probably not be as different as the change from ibook to powerbook .. right? just different specs .. i am guessing .. and internal changes in the fan and stuff .. right?

Good for you RocketMan. You will love it. I have the 17"PB 1.33Ghz and it's a dream to me. Also, unless Macworld SF is around the corner then waiting makes no real sense. The iMac G4 is really due for a major change and the 20th anniversary Macintosh may just well be a desktop and not a notebook at all.
