i need an external firewire hard drive and have been shopping for a 800/400/USB 2.0, 120GB, 7200 RPM, 8MB cache drive. It'll be used for music production and i have to transport it daily so it needs to be as durable as possible. Does anyone have any opinions about the Maxtor, OWC Mercury, or LaCie drives? Thanks!

I got a Lacie USB 2.0 250GB. It was a steal of a price, but the thing thrummed terribly. I returned it for a FW800 OWC Mercury, which doubled the cost and halved the capacity. Faster though. It thrums, but not so bad, and it has rubber feet which stop the hum resonating through my desk.
It's most excellent!

Thanks for the info. i'm pressed to get a hard drive soon so it looks like the OWC wins... The OWC drives seem pretty big though... about half the size of the 15" pb. Have you ever tried transporting them?
If there are any other opinions, please let me know. Thanks again!

Get the LaCie F.A. Porsche designed drive. Very compact, matches the PB perfectly and is rock solid. I would only buy LaCie. I got the 160GB for $170 a few months ago. I have also seen the 200GB for around 220. Check out dealmac.com listings.

The Lacie Porsche design was the thrumming one I had.
It was a steal for $99 and 250GB!!! A sale at CompUSA a couple of weeks ago. USB only though.
I wouldn't say it's that much smaller than the OWC.
But yes, large compared to the PB. They do make mini external HDs too. I've seen them at CompUSA - the trade off is less capacity for the $.
