Hi,

Can anyone please give me details as to what the superdrive on my 17" 1ghz Powerbook can and can't do?

I've read that although it is a 1x drive, the drive can be upgraded to 2x with certain firmware (although it voids the warranty).

I've also read that if I use Toast Titanium (I have Toast Titanium 6, but have not used it yet), I can get the 2x burning speed and the RW feature safely. Has anyone found that to be true?

Thanks!!!

Yes, my 1 GHz 17" PB has the firmware superdrive 'updated', it burns dvd at 2x, and it is supposed that you can use DVD RW, but well, I have not tried it. For backup purposes I use a LaCie d2 external HD (I guess that is the main purpose of dvd rw media).

I need to check the web to found the site where to get the new firmware.

Hi,

Thank you. It would be great if you can give me the site.

The thing is that I was reading that with Toast Titanium, a firmware is not needed for the added capabilities.

The problem is that with a firmware upgrade, it actually voids the warranty, no? I would much rather have a software solution if possible.

Thanks for all your help!!

To be honest I only find the firmware upgrade nice to burn dvd at 2x, nothing more. That is, I much preffer to use my external LaCie d2 cdrw to burn cds. Itīll be better if I have instead of it a LaCie dvd burner, so I would use the internal superdrive only when it is really necessary.
