Just wondering if anyone uses their powerbooks outside in the sunlight.

Can you see the screen?

And I was wondering how long the battery last typically when doing word processing on the go.

Does this answer your question? <g>

The Beach

The screens are pretty decent but really no match for the power of the sun. On my 17" I get around 3 hours or so, I've only been caught flat once or twice. If you turn off the AP & BT, aren't using a lot of audio, have the processor set on conserve and don't have the display cranked all the way up, I bet you'd get more time than that.

If I hold my 15" at the right angle, you can see the sun shining through the apple on the opposite side of the screen.

Other than that, it works pretty decent in direct sunlight.

It certainly does work. However, the intensity of the sun makes your irises respond accordingly. As a result, the screen seems very dim. If you are able to control the surrounding, it might work halfway decently.

It's all a matter of balance between the screen's brightness and the ambient light level.
