I was just at best buy playing around with apples ibook G4 800mhz comps they have there and I came to the conclusion that the LCD apple use dont seem to have quite to color range depth and sharpness of the pc laptop they there in store mostly hp, sony, etc. This seemed to apply to the all the other apple products with LCDs they had as well. I spent a good 10 minutes or so playing around with the display settings on the ibook changing brightness color depth, adjusting the screen around for beter viewing angles, etc and still couldnt quite get the color to look as good as all the pcs did by default. I'm not sure if this is a common thing or what like if apple uses cheaper lcds that others but I would have thought it should be the other way around since apple has allways been like a high quality product :/

just as an example the dock that usualy is a defualt color of light blue turns up to be a light greyish color on the LCDs.

Did you try calibrating the display profile on the iBook to suit your taste?

yes i did. I just hapend to think there were other color modes for the display under the color tab. It was set on the LCD one i think they had a RGB and anouther mode. I doubt that would have done any good though since it should be set for an LCD.

i found out when searching for an iBook G4 review on google that aprently Apple is using LG. Phillips LCD screens in them. The specs of these screen are poor:
Viewing Angle: 50/90, 6Bit 262,144 colors(not even true millions of colors!), and a very slow response time of 45ms.
Here is the likely source for the 12" screen:

not good if that is true. I was looking at geting an ibook G4 with an airport card for $1,088 with my student discount. I love the fact that the iBook has an 4-6 hours. But with an LCD of such poor quality I might just have to go with a pc laptop that I can install linux on instead and sacrafice good battery life even though i want an iBook.

I have always thoght the iBooks had decent lcds. They look okay from what I have experienced. They don't hold a candle to some of the higher end pc lcds (sony TR series and fugi lifebook 5020D come to mind - 10.6" mind you). BTW, from what I gather around here average battery life is about 3.5 hrs working. That is pretty good, but you can definitely find a pc laptop with that, you won't have to sacrafice batt life... it just won't look as good as the ibook... and wont have osX

Remember if you compose an article comparing mac to PC, and the PC beating the mac hands down on just about anything (seems to happen a lot lately), to use horribly bad spelling and grammar.

Your spelling and grammar was acceptable! I DEEM THIS TOPIC NONSENSE!

Yep, the lcd is aging. Everyone touted how good it was when the dual usb iBook shipped a few years ago. Don't know how it's compared with portable in the same segment these days, but I know the iBook lcd is aging. Still I am considering buying one. Applying the spanning hack, adding a cheap but good crt, and you'll have a great setup on the desk, and a good Mac portable on the go. That's what I need. (Or a PowerBook.. We'll see)

Hrmm, since the LCD is aged it would be actually quite interesting to compare the LCD to an older pc around P3 area. To bad you can’t find those old guys in the computer stores these days just to have a look. I am either getting an ibook or an older pc laptop as a cheap solution something like an IBM ThinkPad T23 or so. I prefer the ibook especially since I can get it with airport card

Actually, I prefer my LCD (Ti-400) set at the sRGB setting, the colors and deeper and more vibrant. I've noticed that if I go through the color calibration process, either using Apple's or SuperCal, that I end up with settings that look almost exactly like sRGB.

Yes, the iBook LCD isn't as good as the AlPB 15" and 17", models, my understanding is that the 12" AlPB uses the same screen as the 12" iBook--it certainly is too bad that they didn't use a better LCD. On the other hand, everyone wants a cheaper iBook?

In my opinion, the 12" iBook screen is better than the 14" iBook, provided your eyesight can handle the smaller type.

I have noticed that some of the new PC laptops use a XGA or SXGA screen and while it looks really clear and fluid I don't care for the high degree of glare and reflection. I was at CompUSA and was amazed how clear the Toshiba and Sony screens looked but I could also see fingerprints and the reflection of the whole store behind me as if the screen was a mirror. That's annoying for a laptop. If that's what they have to use to get the colors to look brighter and richer then it's no good to anyone.
