I've had my ibook (G4/800) a little over a month now and have overall been extremely pleased. It really is a beautiful machine and a joy to be on.

But I am concerned with how much it has been freezing up and crashing this past week. I've had to do force quits more times than I can recall--it's almost becoming routine and this is making me very nervous.

I've read on other posts how installing memory can cause this. Not the case here. I installed 512 of crucial memory in it's first week and absolutely no problems.

Can anyone offer some advice? Here's what changed last week:

I installed my Airport Extreme Card purchased from Apple Store,

installed a Netgear Wireless Router WGR614 v4,

and did a software update when a window prompted me to--update for 10.3.3, ichat and I forget what the other one was for.

In addition to the frequent crashing, the email window (.mac) pops up with error messages (server not available, need authentication) and email sends out wirelessly only about 10%.

I sent a report to Apple about a crash last night while I was on MacNN Forum. This website has actually caused the most freezes in the past week.

Since being part of this Forum I've learned a lot and have more confidence in the people here than with some of the tech reps at my dsl co. or netgear or even Apple. (No offense to those folks) it's just that the contributors here are true Apple people and can share real world experiences very clearly and with a desire to see everyone get the best experience with their Apples.

So just wanted to acknowledge this forum.

The RAM is the most likely cause if you are having a Kernel Panic. Try removing it and see if you experience any crashes.

When you say it crashes are you able to do anything? Is it just a program that crashes or does the whole OS crash?

You could try to repair permissions and repair the disk using the Panther install disk. Just start up from the disk and use Disk Utility.

What version of Safari are you using? I haven't had any trouble since I updated to 1.2. When I used 1.1 it would crash on me all the time.

Are you saying that after 4+ weeks the ram could suddenly be the problem?

I just crashed (machine froze up). I was in Classic environment using Office 98 and in Appleworks OSX--going back and forth. Cursor stopped moving. Had to do a force quit. Was not on the internet.

Safyri is 1.2.1 (v125.1)

Am attempting to send this wirelessly.

Nope, won't go. Came downstairs to hook up to the ethernet cable.

RAM can fail in the blink of an eye. I had the same problem with the RAM in my last iBook. It would lock up every time I tried to boot up.

As far as your network problem goes, the RAM may give you the same problem. I not sure though.

Ram issues as the source of a problem aren't always predictable IME. The ram I bought with my iBook got unstable last fall after several years of usage. My new Kingston ram have been stable as a rock. Crucial is a quality brand with a lifetime quarantie IIRC, so it shouldn't be any problems getting a replacement for free.
