Well, the fan finally came on again in my 900/G3. It sounds like a 747 on the ramp.

I used to use GaugePro to measure heat (on older machines), and that just doesn't get it. None of the utilities for X that are posted at MacUpdate or Versiontracker will measure the heat (this motherboard evidently has a different chip that doesn't include a temp measure). MyBattery, the great program that it is, doesn't give a good reading either (I don't think this thing is at 51F or 71F, the two it comes up with).

So how do we measure temp via the OS? Is the fan on this puppy even connected to the OS (in X) or does it have its own thermal sensor?

Any help would be appreciated.

I think that ThermographX is compatible with the iBook G3.

It keeps a running record of your iBooks temps. Very helpful to me.

Hope this helps.
I gotta have more cowbell.

Thanks, but I tried it. Evidently my 900 Mhz G3 ibook has some special proc chip that doesn't include the usual heat sensor. SOMETHING senses the heat, b/c the fan turns on when it gets hot, I just don't know how to get to it (or if that something is hardware-only).
