Ok...I did a search and didn't find the answers that I was looking for. Forgive me if I may have searched incorrectly. Anyway... here's the problem. I have a G3 iBook 900mhz w/384 ram running Panther 10.3.3. I have all the updates that Apple has put out and have already ran the disk repair. The past few days, my iBook screen will turn light grey and a box, kind of like a giant bezel, pops up. The background of that box has an image of the power button. And in that box it states that the iBook must be restarted. The words are also written in japanese and a few other langauges[to make it clear to whoever is looking at the screen that the computer MUST be restarted]. This has just started to happen recently. I'm starting to worry that something is wrong with my iBook. The most recent time that it has happened is about 10 mins ago(I was running Safari and Mail). The other time I recall it happening today I was running iTunes, Mail, and Adium.

Any ideas or help as to what I should do?

Thanks

Just a quick note, that is a kernel panic, you should make sure that you don't have anything none-standard plugged into your machine. (mice, printers, hard drives, hubs, etc)

If you continue to get kernel panics with nothing plugged in, call apple and tell them your problem, you might have some bad hardware.

If the panics stop, plug in one peripheral (what I mentioned above) at a time and see if you can find out which one makes the machine panic.

Hope this helps.

Let us know.

Kernal Panic? Do these normally happen after owning the machine for awhile? The only external hardware that I have used on this iBook is a mouse. But I've used the same mouse for the past 7 months with this kernal panic never coming up. Could it be something else?

Kernel panic. They usually indicate hardware problems. Try removing extra pieces of RAM and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then your RAM is probably bad.

Ok so I took out the ram hoping that the supposed kernal panics would go away. So right now everything is as it was when I first purchased it. However, I was just using safari and mail and the same thing happened. No external devices where attached. What else could be the possible reason behind this. Would a clean install of panther fix everything?

I have found that the easiest way to get rid of a kernel panic (when everything else like RAM is ruled out) is to do a clean install. I had to do it just yesterday. I was running Linux on one partition and Panther on another. The kernel panic didn't start until I set my machine up that way. Sooo, I just did a clean install and did away with Linux. Works like a charm now.

Have you started up with the Panther install CD and repaired permissions and repaired the disk? Sometimes going that route will do the trick.

I agree with the above post. You should still be under apple care, if you don't feel like screwing around with it, call Apple. (and you can be without your machine for a bit)

They will fix it.
