I dropped my iBook with power on several weeks ago. After that, many weird things happened, like some file cannot be copied. Today it even won't start. It will stop at the login window and the hard disk just keeps spinning. I think it must be a hard disk failure.

Now I have two options. I can either send it back to Apple (but my Apple Care plan has already expired) or I can try to replace the hard disk with a new one by myself. What is the price of replacing a hard disk?

Thank you

Yes, I can. Actually the same situation happened before when I updated to 10.3.3. Then I re-installed from CD. When I format the disk, I chose write zero to every byte because I heard by doing so the OS will single out bad sectors. But now it happened again and I don't want to put my data on risk again.
