Well, this is a strange situation. While I was wiping my powerbook (rev.b, 60gb) clean and doing a fresh install of 10.3, my hard drive started to thrash and then beep at me (sound coming from the drive or motherboard). Before I get Apple on the phone or drive to the Apple store, I want to see if I have not forgotten to do anything. This is a 60gb Toshiba drive and these beeps were not occurring before.
The beeps occurred during the second phase of the 10.3 install. After a bit, it continued on and everything seemed fine. However, as I was downloading the 10.3.3 update, it became worse. Given the fact that I just wiped out the drive, I saw no harm in running diags and then formatting with zeros. After a while, the whole beeping thing stops and it continues as expected.
Here is what reproduced this beep.
Formatting with 10.3, and 10.2 (to a lesser extent).
Installing 10.3, and patching 10.3->10.3.3
Diags show the drive as in working condition.
Any advice to troubleshoot would be welcome. Has anyone ever had this happen to them, if so what was the issue?
Thanks
