I have been waiting for the revised powerbooks to come out so I could pick up the 1.25 15" version for a lot less. Seeing as the low end 15" has a faster processor than the old top of the line 1.25 there should be some good deal to be had right? Has anyone found any sites that have started to discount the old powerbooks yet?
Thanks!

Not yet, but I'm monitoring <http://www.macprices.com>. I imagine that the new pricing on previous models will start to show up this week at the sites of various resellers. Give 'em a day or two.

Look for them to basically match the educational prices of the Apple Student store. By the time you pay shipping and tax unfortunately, IMHO you're better off going for the new one.

Amazon has dropped its prices already. They traditionally had some great deals. I missed their last one: when the rev B 12" Powerbooks came out, they were selling the rev A's for 1050 plus a free iSight to boot! These were new units, not refurbs. One can only hope they have similar deals this time around.

As for used units, they will start to appear on the cheap pretty soon. Lot of people looking to upgrade.

unless you buy from Amazon...no shipping charges and no tax..no hassle.

Oh..and I'm going to be watching for some good sales/promos to clear the old models.

The 12" 1.33 is tempting...and the 60 gig hard drive and faster bus is very handy for video work..and the airport extreme card included really make the new model probably a better value at 1,795 verus 1,495 for the older model. I'd rather pay 300 and get a much better computer.

BUT..if they drop the prices further on the old 12" 1 gig powerbooks to say 1,295 I'd go with that. But thats I'm guessing 99% wishful thinking on my part.

In the meantime...my 500 mhz ibook is puttering along nicely on 10.3.

Wish no more! amazon.com has it for 1399 with 100 mail in rebate. So that is 1299. I know it is $4 over budget but...

I usually find the best deals on ex-display machines that are outdated.

John Lewis in the UK used to have some great offers... my best was an iBook for £299!

My maxim is, if you can afford the better machine, go for it. It will work out much better in the long run with higher residuals etc unless you are getting a deal to good to refuse. and how many times do they come along?

They have some good refurbished models for sale now. They are very tempting but I just don't need one. My quicksilver is good for now, maybe I will upgrade when G5s come out in them.

wow..that price is for the combo drive...

It is 1499 with 100 mail in rebate for the superdrive.

so you save 400 dollars off the new model.

I'm thinking about this one a few days.

400 dollars more gets you:

1. 60 gigs versus 40....20 gigs of storage more (very important for iMovie). I know two people who both have the 12" 1 gig model with the 40 gig drive..they are both imovie nuts and are constantly having to delete files to finish their movies. 20 gigs would give some breathing room.

2. Airport extreme installed... I already have a extreme card in my tower I don't use (I plug it in direct to my airport base station via the ethernet cable for security reasons)... so thats not too big a deal, but would be nice to have another I guess.

3. Faster bus speed. I think this is a big improvement for imovie work which I would use mine a lot for.

4. 4x versus 2x dvd burning. Not a huge deal , but nice to have the extra speed.

So you can see I'm talking myself into the new model.

I think now would be a good time to buy the powerbook for me as I think the G5 12" is going to be a long time in coming. I think the G5 powerbooks will start out in the 17"...then a few months later the 15" then lastly the 12"..so I'm not too worried about buying a 12" g4 chip powerbook today and having a G5 12" powerbook come out in the next year.
