I need a new monitor for my PowerMac and was thinking that maybe instead of shelling out $1000 for a nice LCD I might go ahead and toss my G5 up on eBay and buy a new 15" Powerbook instead.

I'm moving into a studio apartment next month, and a laptop seems ideal in such a small space. I'm not a power user - a bit of software development is the most strenuous activity that my computer has to endure.

Can anyone give me some pros and cons, or even just opinions?

One of the pros of a PB is that you can sit in your recliner while watching TV, eating a sandwich, drinking a coke, listening to music, chatting online, and surfing MacNN all at the same time! I would consider myself a power user and for personal use, my PB is great. I would say the one of the drawbacks is speed. However for what you are doing, if you don't have a huge need for speed, a PB would be my recomendation. You can still get a nice LCD later to go with it.

Thats me right now Safari MacNNing, IE browsing, audio iChatting, watching DVDs, big coke and pack of cigs on the table. The glory of multi-tasking.

I couldn't comment on the difference between a G5 1.8 and a powerbook, but I would never have solely a 'desktop' in a small flat. I've a real small shoebox in London and a laptop is fantastic, and when I need a big screen I just put one in. Any other time there is nothing like using your mac in any room, rather than 'sitting at the computer'.

Just my 2 pence

barefeats.com is the place to look for comparisons like this:

http://www.barefeats.com/pvp.html

Depending on which G5 you have, the PB lag significantly behind in power. Do any gaming? There's other comparisons on barefeats.com with respect to gaming.

And if you're going to be using a PB with an external monitor a significant amount of time, then keep the G5...
