Mr Joswiak refused to be drawn on when the next generation of notebooks, using the PowerPC G5 processor, would be released.

The Power Mac G5 desktop was launched in June 2003. But Apple engineers are working on reducing the heat generated by the chip before it can be incorporated into notebooks.

"In the very long run, the G5 is part of our long term processor roadmap, but it will be some time before that processor will be in a notebook," said Mr Joswiak.

He declined to be pinned down to a date for G5 portables, but pointed out that it had taken at least two years for the G4 chip to make it from the desktop to the notebook.

Except his analogy falls flat. BMW is having loads of trouble with it's new 745 series. Case in point: Man trapped in BMW. But that's avoiding the issue.

I don't think Apple is having any more trouble with it's product quality than any other computer manufacturer. They just get more notice b/c of all the computer companies, they're the most noteworthy. Being the leader of the pack also means you're a big target when things go wrong.

That being said, I don't think the cloned son of Jobs & Woz is blowing smoke. I bet they're seeing signs that PowerBook sales are slipping and the primary reason is due to the rumor of G5s in the PB line. I think they're trying to counteract that rumor by being honest about their design timeline. So on one leve, I think they're trying to get the sale, but not for the reasons you think. The old adage stands: buy the computer when you need it.

Here is Beverly Hills everyones got BMWs and Macs. So the whole global market thing means jack. Globalisation and market percentages are dumb ways of guaging success. Most of the world speaks English, but there's more Chinamen and Hindus than anyone else. The English are very few but they've crafted a simple language that is easy to learn and get to the point with. Like OSX.
