I am looking to purchase a new 15 inch Powerbook and would like to hear what are the pros and cons of getting either the 4200 or the 5400 HD.

$50.00 BTO option for 5400rpm HD will supposedly provide about 20% speed increase in everyday use for opening and closing files, etc. I ordered a BTO 15.2 Powerbook on Monday with 5400 HD with shipping estimated on April 27th. I will report back to you then.

Hard drives in portables are the #1 bottleneck for the vast majority of tasks, IMO. You should definitely upgrade to the faster drive. It is worth every penny.

Do the faster drives have a big impact on battery life and heat?

i ordered the 80GB 5400.
should have offered like this imho
80 GB 4200 (standard)
60 GB 7200 (+50)
80 GB 5400 (+50)
that way people could decide if they want more speed and less space for a little more money or they could decide more space with just a little more speed.
this is the way apple(and many other companies) used to set up this part of ordering.
options are a good thing

options are expensive. The more there are the more they have to stock and plan and market for.

I would rather have them *not* void my warranty if I install a 7200 RPM harddrive. (Which is what I would do if they would allow me).

The max capacity for 7200 drives is 60GB which you may consider a downside compared to the 80GB 5400 drive.

you MIGHT ( i stress might) not void your warranty if you have a licensed apple technician perform the upgrade for you. yes, this is really an unnecessary cost and you shouldn't have to do it, but just laying out an option.
i am sure i will be completely pleased with my new 80GB 5400 drive. i plan to upgrade when they reach like 120GB 7200 portable drives. G5 Powerbook will probably be out by then :-D
in other words...gonna be awhile.
