what speed do you think it will be at. It should have at least 16 mb of cache don't you think with that kind of hd after packing more density of sutff to get 20 gigs more. That means the 80 gig 7k drive should be out soon. Is that the some hp is selling on there web site.

Hello, future hard drive for the PowerBook G5! 4200 RPM or not, I think a lot of people would like to have that kind of storage in a laptop.

where did you see that it says 4200rpm. Yes sata would be nice or sata scsi like the hitachi one.

So that means the 80 gig 7k is out for sure then. size but speed as well that is why the 80 gig 7k drive will be steller. I hope the power is very low compared to the ones now.

Don't rightly recall, but the Register now has an article up that confirms both 4200rpm and 8MB cache.

A 4200rpm 100GB drive does not mean that a 7200rpm 80GB drive must be available. And if it is, faster spinning requires more power, so unless there is a drastic change in the mechanism or the mass of its components, don't hold your breath.

I would think that sort of drastic change would be more likely to coincide with a change of type (ATA to SATA maybe). If only because it would require extra reconfiguration of the manufacturing process.

Man, 'manufacturing' is an annoyingly long word to type with one hand.

one hand sorry to hear. yes battery would be a problem but they said they did some power improvement to help it right? Would it be better to get a 80 gig at 7k for speed or 100 gig for space and slower speed. I know 10.4 will have speed improvements I hope.

thats perfect timing. 10.3.4 by the time it comes out so the 10.3.x is commin out in perfect timing to allow apple to finish the 10.4 with the g5 laptop. Just by chance it will be like that but that will be great. 100 gig or maybe m ore features and they will stick in the 1.8 inch drives in them like with the ibook's therefore they can get more other things in there.

Here's the thing - greater data densities mean more sectors pass under the head per rotation. Situation: Two single-platter drives (HDs usually have multiple platters, quite shallow), rotating at the same speed, drive A is set up to hold 20 GB on its platter and drive B is set up for 50 GB on its platter with the same area.

The effect is that sequential reads and writes are significantly faster on the denser disk.
