I know this has been posted more than once.

We all have the problem that DVDs from the "wrong" region don't work in our drives, even not with video lan client (like recommended several times as a solution for this problem).

I would like to start a collection of firmware patches that HAVE BEEN TESTED by the people who recommend them.

Its a risk to patch a firmware. We risk the damage of our drives which results in lots of $/€ for a replacement. So I think if someone has taken the risk and found it working well (lost a lot of sweat in the process :o), he/she should share the knowledge.

So please post your powerbook model, the drive model (find it in the system profile), the patch location and write a short comment.
I hope this will become a great and reliable list.

there is minimal risk to patching your drive, providing you do not do something like turn off the power while you're flashing your drive. there is already a good collection of firmware at http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/download2.html (mac only) and http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php (mac and PC).

i have set my pb to region 2. region 1 movies are seen on the other mac here.

i do NOT want to risk anything with the firmware patch for making the dvd player of the PB to be region free.

jsut because it voids all warranties, AND in case i ever need to take the PB to be fixed, only having a laptop mechanic to have a look on the powerbook tends to cost as much as a cheap world player.

so, the one solution that works here with a few hundred region 1 and tens of region 2 and other region movies is a daewoo world player. we got it last year from www.dvdoverseas.com - i know it is not what you want, BUT ... 1) you don't void your powerbook warranty and 2) a world player costs like a normal player, that is with 80 - 100 $ you can get one that works more than fine ..

I'd be keen to know if anyone's done this firmware upgrade - it promises region-free:
