Welcome.

And as a little piece of advice: Please, please... make sure you put more RAM in that iBook. Taking it to 384MBs should be enough for what you are wanting to do with the machine. On 128MBs, your OS X experience will be a painful one.

from what I am told by other mac users on irc you need at least 512mb in order to have a decent experience with mac os x otherwise your comp can lag seriously.

That is not true. Mac is definetely the way to go. Be sure to ask them when the last time they used a Mac was. I get a lot of people who say they used OS 9 on an iMac at CompUSA, or have never used one before at all. I was against Macs also until I used one for a weekend. After using it I bought an eMac, and a year later I bought a G5. It was a great decision for me, and I am sure you will love your iBook also. I have switched 6 people to Mac. All of them are happy with their Macs also. Have fun.

Of course not.

We are a dedicated group of users for the very reason that we think we have it better than everybody else.

And sure, we may not have as many games, but the ones we do have are good ones.

128MB is barely enough for a Windows XP PC. It is enough for basic use, such as e-mail and internet, MP3 listening... etc.

OS X works with RAM completely differently than Windows does. The more RAM you add, the faster the system gets. And there doesn't seem to be an end to that. I have 1GB now, I had 1.25GBs of RAM a few months ago. I noticed minor slow downs almost immediately after stepping down to 1GB.

OS X will choke on 128MBs of RAM. Even for basic use, the system will lag almost constantly. 256MBs is better, but not by a lot. I recommend 384MBs as the absolute minimum for anybody using OS X. If you can afford a 512MN stick, to take your machine to 640MBs, go for it.

You will hear it over and over again: The amount of RAM in your machine can completely change your view on OS X.

It is different. 384 should work well for you. 128 is not fun though. A 256 stick from Crucial is just $77.

Here you go.

256MBs of RAM for a little over $50. Guarenteed to work in your iBook.

I buy everything from OWC. Guaranteed compatability, excellent quality, excellent prices, excellent service, excellent shipping times and prices (Overnight shipping = $8).

PC100 or 133 will do. I bought a 512MB module from RamDirect. They sell on eBay for a decent deal. I have had it for over a year now without any trouble. Check out their site:

www.ramdirect.com

Lifetime guarantee also.

You definately didn't go wrong by getting the iBook. People who say Mac's suck really don't know what they are talking about. I have used everything under the sun and nothing even compares. Rock solid, no viruses, no spyware and the resale value can't be beat.

Having to buy more RAM can be a bummer when you're strapped for cash. But look at the bright side: Because of the way OS X uses RAM, buying more RAM is a cheap way for you to actually make your machine run faster. Otherwise, the only other alternative to make your machine faster would be to buy a processor upgrade, or in your case with a notebook, a faster iBook.

In about a week I will, Im a 15 year old high school student, Im lucky I even got this ibook, I had a choice between this, and a Toshiba protege, 1.3 ghz, CELERON, Yuck , Combo drive

but I chose the ibook, i hope this model is the all white one

I could never have afforded this laptop brand new, It will take a car from my Rc collection to buy a 512 mb ram stick, But I think it will be well worth it

Thanks!

No problem.

We've all been in your position at one point or another: coming to the Mac and feeling a little lost. Mac message boards are great, especially MacNN, because you will always find a swarm of people who are more than happy to answer any questions you have or help you find whatever you need because... well... we want there to be more Mac users.

You may or may not find the iBook to be slow. I can't say. It depends on how you will be using it.

Don't expect to play any modern games well. And honestly: in comparison to Windows, OS X will feel slow on the iBook. But that isn't because a 700MHz G3 isn't a fast processor, but because OS X is a next-generation operating system. It is demanding on all Macs but the higher end G4 Power Macss and G5s.

Go into this optimistically: It sounds like you are getting the better deal. A 1.3GHz PC, even with a nice graphics card, is worth under $200, easily. An LCD would add another few hundred. iBook 700s still sell for close to $700ish on eBay. So, you're getting the better deal.

And if you do find your iBook to be slow, then put it up on eBay and sell it for a chunk of change. That iBook, if you do decide that it is too slow or that you simply do not want or need a notebook, would bring you almost enough cash to get a 1.25GHz G4 eMac.

So, make the trade, get your RAM, evaluate the system and how you use it, and then decide how you feel about it.

Given the age of your iBook, if anything in it were going to die, it would have already or it wont for a long time. Parts almost always either die when they are brand new or when they are very old.

I had been trying for months to get a ibook,And I went on craigslist.org, A local b/s/t forum, People were selling hundreds of ibooks, But all turned down my offer of the trade.

Then yesterday, I decided to post a add, 600 dollars for your ibook or trade, After a couple hours, I started getting more and more, Long story short, The last email I got offered me to laptops, I chose the ibook, Should be getting it around 10 tomorrow, I will let you guys know tomorrow

As for games on your iBook. I had an iBook 700 with 640MB RAM. I played Jedi Knight II, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Aliens vs Predator, Ghost Recon, No One Lives Forever, Dungeon Seige, Warcraft III and a few others. It played them all just fine. I have found that you can get games at CompUSA cheaper than most any place else.

There is very little that can be done on a PC that can't be done on a Mac. If there is a program that hasn't been released on the Mac you can get Virtual PC. The Mac has Microsoft Office which is a big deal when Mac's and PC's need to play nice.

A great book to get is Mac OS X: The Missing Manual by David Pogue. This book is great for the newbie or vetern.

Let us know what you think of the iBook.

I helped my sis in a similar situation, she had a Sony VAIO and wanted an iBook. I sold the VAIO laptop (933 Celeron) for $650 on eBay and put it towards the new 1gig iBook.

OS X is a great OS. You certainly won't miss all the virii and spyware in the Windows world. OS X will feel slower than Windows because it has more eye candy and is for the most part a more pleasant experience.

Good luck and enjoy.
