i just ordered a 15" pb. i want to add more ram.
two questions:
1.) is 512mb sufficient for video editing, and having multi apps? in other words is the difference between 512 and 1 gig the same as 256 to 512? (maybe its a wierd question, sorry.)

2.) i noticed its 80 or 100 dollars to have just one 512 stick of ram. plus another 512 stick costs 100 right? so altogether youve spent 200 to double the memory.
now wouldn't it be cheaper not to make this upgrade, but to just add a 512 stick for 100. yeah its only 768 mb of ram, but it costs half as much as going to 1 gig.

any tips?
thanks.

If you want to do serious video editing, get a GIG. The difference is very noticeable. When I did video editing on my Quicksilver, having 1.5 GIGs of RAM made a massive difference. Plus if you're on a laptop more RAm would help speed things up and compensate for the slow HD.

That is exactly why I didn't go for the option to have one 512 stick; with 512 costing ~100 on the open market today, there wasn't a price break. It still costs $200 to get 1 Gig RAM, whether you go the single stick option or not.

and don't forget to ebay the old chips once you upgrade! You can get decent prices for "official" Apple ram...

Just out of curiosity, if I went and bought a 512MB stick of PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM for my new AlBook, would my old 256MB stick work in my parents' 20" iMac LCD? It also uses PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM.

get a place with ram with a lifetime warranty. its less likely to die because they are willing to insure it, and it will be replaced.
